Hiya,
.
Thanks for choosing to read my first ever blog, this is all about giving you inspiration and examples of the different ways you could style a flower crown with a veil...
.
But first, here's a bit of context drawing from my own story...
.
Me and Oliver got married over 7 years ago now and it was the best day ever. I really love everything about our wedding, but, one of the hardest things about working in the wedding industry is spending your days surrounded by beautiful images and ever changing fashions and trends and then trying not to re-imagine the whole look of your wedding allllll the time....oooh, maybe I should have worn gold shoes (I mean, I defo should have worn gold shoes but oh well!).
There is, as well as the shoes, one change I would definitely make to my look, I would wear my veil with a flower crown...
.
.
I wore a clotted cream sequin gown that I had designed myself and was made by a friend and colleague. I also wore a belt made from the border of an Indian saree that I had in my stash of bits and bobs and a vintage veil that I bought from a beautiful vintage boutique called Annie's in Islington, London. I was shopping with my mum and sister, we were mooching about in Annie's which used to sell lovely vintage bridal pieces amongst all the other treasures, and there, being displayed beautifully with a wax flower crown, was this perfect piece of late Victorian silk tulle with a very simple lace border on three sides. I tried it on and was smitten immediately. I couldn't wait to buy it even though I still had no idea what I was going to wear. After a bit of playing around, I decided I would wear the veil draped over the top of my head a bit like a mantilla veil. I decided to fix the veil to my hair with some beautiful vintage dress clips that a friend had given me months before. However, this turned out to be my mistake because as beautiful as they were, they were not practical in the least because, well, they were dress clips not hair clips. In fact, I was relieved to get though the ceremony without it falling clean off my head. You can see in the picture above that its already slipping, though by this point the nerves have left me and we are in full on celebration mode!
.
With all this lovely hindsight, I know exactly what I would do now, I'd wear my veil with a flower crown full of all the colours that were part of our wedding and I would make it a statement part of my whole look.
.
I have always loved flower crowns, a fresh halo bursting with beautiful scented blooms is pure heaven to me. I love the traditional imagery of a flower crown, delicate sprigs of orange blossom worn by brides in times gone by, right through to the big bright and colourful festival inspired creations popular today. When I worked in costume I absolutely LOVED it when a wedding was scripted and we had to costume the bride on some period drama or other. One particular time comes to mind, a story set in the late Victorian period and 'the bride' wore a huge long veil with a little crown of delicate silk orange blossoms with wax buds and silk ribbons, pure heaven. Following the actress round all day with an umbrella and holding said veil up to keep it out of the mud, not so heaven.
.
So, as this is a big love of mine, I thought I could share with you some ideas of how you might wear a sequin flower crown with a veil as part of your wedding look and don't worry, there's not a misused dress clip in sight...here we go ...
.
.
.
- Wear the sequin flower crown across the front of the head with the veil on a comb tucked into the back of the hair where the crown ties.
.
- Wear the crown as an alice band on top of your head with the ribbons tying at the nape of your neck and the veil on a comb tucked in behind.
.
- I absolutely love this one below, this is defo what I should have done. A soft tulle drop veil pinned into the hair at the crown of your head, then the sequin flower crown is worn like a head band with the ribbons tying at the nape of your neck. You could then decide whether to wear the blusher part of the veil over your face, over the top of the crown or wear it as a two tier veil....
.
- Similarly you could wear the sequin crown round your head like a halo with the veil either underneath or over the top
.
There are so many possibilities. My tip is to treat it as dress up to find the right option for you and my experience working in costume taught me that detail is key and anything is achievable...
